Here’s what’s going on in and around El Paso this weekend, March 28 – March 30, 2014. Some events are free, some will cost you a few bucks:

FRIDAY:

Live Horse Racing – The live horse racing season continues at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. Post time is 12:55 p.m. Free general admission and parking. More Details

Friday at the Fire – Enjoy an evening of live music set against the ambiance of the Freedom Crossing outdoor fireplace. Tonight, Sha'Vonne 6- 11 p.m. at Freedom Crossing at Fort Bliss, 1611 Haan Road. FREE.

UTEP’s Get Reel Film Series – Get Reel (previously Cinema Novo) presents independent and educational films as well as blockbuster movies for as little as $1. Tonight’s movie is Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. 7 p.m., UTEP Union Cinema, 500 W. University. Admission is $1 – $2. More Details

Shakespeare on the Rocks – The 25th anniversary season continues with “Lot o’ Shakespeare”. Tim Mooney will perform a one-man show featuring monologues from all 38 plays and six of Shakespeare’s sonnets. 7 p.m. at the Chamizal National Memorial, 800 S. San Marcial. Ticket prices vary. More Details

Ice Skating – Whoosh around on ice skates in the area’s largest public ice skating rink. 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Sierra Providence Event Center, 4100 E Paisano, behind the El Paso County Coliseum. Cost: $8, $6 Military. Admission includes skate rental. More Details

The Tokens - The doo-wop group best known for their chart-topping single “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, closes the Showtime El Paso season. 7:30 p.m. at the Abraham Chavez Theatre, adjacent to the El Paso Convention Center. Tickets are$30. 544-2022

El Paso Playhouse Presents ‘Dial ‘M’ For Murder’ – El Paso Playhouse presents the classic crime-thriller about a man who arranges to have his wife murdered. 8 p.m. at the El Paso Playhouse, 2501 Montana. Ticket prices vary. More Details

SATURDAY:

Downtown Artist and Farmers Market – The market offers the chance to shop for original arts and crafts and regionally grown produce in an outdoor setting while enjoying entertainment featuring local artists, food vendors and free activities for the entire family. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Plaza District (near The Garden Restaurant) along Anthony Street. Winter Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing – The “producers only” market features area farmers, backyard gardeners and artisans selling organic and pesticide-free vegetables, locally-made goat cheeses, natural free range chickens and eggs, native plants for home and yard, fresh-baked breads and salsas. 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (575) 589-0653, ext. 3

Franklin Mountain Poppies Fest – The 8th annual fest celebrates the awakening of the Mexican Gold Poppies on Castner Range in Northeast El Paso. The day includes nature walks, nature talks, educational exhibits, and wildlife displays including a wolf and Houdini the Harris Hawk from the El Paso Zoo. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at El Paso Museum of Archaeology, 4301 Transmountain.
