The Asarco smokestacks were erected in 1951 and 1967.  The statue of Christ on Mount Cristo Rey was erected in 1940.  Only one of them will still be standing after April 13th.

The ASARCO smokestacks are coming down next Saturday, April 13th, and for 20 bucks, you can have a front row, bird’s eye seat.

If you are willing to climb Mount Cristo Rey, and pay your $20, you can get a spot in the crown at the base of the statue on the actual monument.

If you have never climbed to the top of the mountain, you should be prepared for quite the hike.  The Mount Cristo Rey Restoration Committee says if you plan on settling in and catching your breath before the 6:30 – 7:00am start time, you should start heading up the mountain around 4:30 that morning to give yourself plenty of time for the climb.

And if you’re worried about dealing with the dust or debris that may kick up when the stacks fall, there’s some more good news.  The Committee believes that Cristo Rey is far enough away from the stacks to prevent any dust or debris from being a problem.
