Fort Bliss will host the Armed Forces Classic, a series of Division I men’s college basketball games that were played this weekend. The games will be played at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany next year, and at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska the year after they are played at Fort Bliss. They will then be played at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina the year after that.

It's a pretty big deal to get the games because they are televised around Veteran’s Day as a morale event for service members. Having it at Fort Bliss will bring a lot of attention to the base, as well as to El Paso. The economic impact of having that kind of sporting event will impact the hotel industry and the restaurant industry, among others. It will also put El Paso on the international map because the games are televised to military bases all over the world.

The Armed Forces Classic is owned and operated by ESPN Events, a division of ESPN. The games will be televised on ESPN as part of the network’s America’s Heroes initiative honoring the men and women who are serving and who have served in the United States military, both at home and abroad.
