Earthquakes And Other Crazy Natural Disasters Here In El Paso

That big truck you felt roll past your house yesterday? It wasn't a truck ... it was a freakin' earthquake.

Yep, it's true ... El Paso felt the rumbling of an earthquake yesterday around 3-ish. According to KVIA, the quakes epicenter was in Reeves County, east of Culberson County, (a couple of hundred miles from us), and it registered 5.4 on the Richter Scale.

Many parts of El Paso, including the KLAQ studios, felt the the aftershocks or tremors or whatever they're called as they made it all the way to El Chuco ... or, El Shake-oh.

Fortunately, damage here at KLAQ was minimal.

The city of Mentone Texas, a couple of hours from EP, was the center of another quake in 2020 that hit "5" on the richter scale and was also felt here.

As for other disasters...

Tornadoes are not common around El Paso, although, I have seen some pretty mean dust devils wreck stuff.

We have had funnel cloud sightings though. 3 in 2021 alone. This one and then there was this one and also this guy.

Hurricanes aren't really a concern around here. We get the wind part on occasion but, otherwise, meh.

Although, being that the international bridges are "ports of entry", I'm told they do get the official rules and procedures for hurricanes. I'm sure they're all followed to a "T".

Tsunamis. I don't care how big or nearby an earthquake may be, I seriously doubt that either the Rio Grande or Ascarate lake will be flooding across El Paso.

That crazy rain in 2006 though ...

In conclusion.

Unless you count orange barrels as a natural disaster ... which they should be ... I think we're pretty safe and chill here in the 915.
