Casualties and Restoration Efforts

At least six people have died in Texas and one in Louisiana from Hurricane Beryl. A huge clean-up and restoration operation is underway to reconnect 2.3 million energy customers who lost power during the storm.

In Harris County, Texas, a 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman died when trees fell onto their homes. Montgomery County confirmed the deaths of three people: a man in his 40s struck by a tree while operating a tractor, and two individuals found in a tent in Magnolia. Houston Police Department reported that information security officer Russell Richardson, 54, died in rising floodwaters.

In Bossier Parish, Louisiana, a woman was killed when a tree fell on her house.

Beryl has been downgraded to a tropical depression, but more than 25 million people from Arkansas to Michigan remain under flood watches. Up to 5 inches of rain and severe thunderstorms, including possible tornadoes, are forecast.

Power Restoration Efforts

About 12% of Texas' 13.8 million customers were without power Tuesday morning. CenterPoint Energy, the main supplier for Houston, has restored over 1 million connections and aims to reconnect another million by the end of Wednesday. Crews are battling high waters to reach some areas after over a foot of rain fell in 24 hours. Fallen trees and strong winds have downed power lines across Greater Houston, worsening the impact.

Residents are facing significant challenges, with power outages affecting food preservation and daily life. Efforts to restore normalcy are ongoing as communities cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.
