Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros is a celebration of children and literacy which began in 1997 at the request of El Paso children’s book author, Pat Mora. Mora wrote an open letter to educators and librarians throughout the country asking them to recognize Children’s Day by creating a celebration to honor children, as it is done in Latin America. She also advocated instilling the love of reading in children since it is one of the most important factors in their future success.

Since then, El Paso has put together one of the most impressive Children’s Day celebrations in the country routinely drawing tens of thousands of attendees and giving away as many as 30,000 books to children who might not otherwise have a book of their own.

This free event is open to the public and will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Washington Park in South-Central El Paso.
