Restaurant row along N. Zaragosa Road is going to get tastier with the addition this year of a new custard and burger chain.

El Paso will be home to a Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers franchise in 2020. The retro-style chain is making its way to the far east side at 1860 N. Zaragosa along the busy stretch of road between Saul Kleinfeld and Montwood that is already home to numerous fast-casual restaurants, per documents found online.

Freddy’s is known for its “steakburgers,” Vienna® Beef hot dogs, "crispy" shoestring fries and frozen custard treats, according to the company website. The Original Double and the Signature Turtle Sundae are two of the most raved-about items on its menu on the internet.

An exact opening date is not yet known. Paul Hoover, area franchise owner, said a few things have to be taken care of first.  “We’re currently working through the permitting phase in El Paso," he said. "(We) hope to start construction on the first Freddy’s location in the coming months."

Although this will be Freddy’s first El Paso location, the first one in the area opened last February in Las Cruces at 604 S. Telshor across from Mesilla Valley Mall. Nationwide, there are nearly 300 Freddy's restaurants in 31 states.
