Here’s the status on the Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers franchise I told you a few months ago will open this year on the far east side.

Freddy’s, revered by so-called Fredheads nationwide for its custard treats, steakburgers, and crispy shoestring fries, is currently renovating the former The Mattress Store building at 1860 N. Zaragoza, next to the road that takes you into the Walmart Supercenter.

I checked with the local franchisee and was told construction is on target and progressing nicely, and while an exact date hasn’t been determined, they’re shooting for a late July opening.

The Zaragoza location will be the first Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in El Paso. The first one in the area opened February 2019 in Las Cruces at 604 S. Telshor across from Mesilla Valley Mall. Nationwide, there are over 350 Freddy's restaurants in 32 states.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, Freddy is a real person. His full name is Freddy Simon. He's a decorated U.S. Army Veteran of WW II who celebrated his 95th birthday this February. His sons co-founded the restaurant along with their friend, and named it in his honor.
