The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their deputies. Deputy Pete Herrera worked for the EPCSO for eleven years. He is the first line of duty death by gunfire of an El Paso County Sheriff's Office Deputy in almost 80 years. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Unfortunately, there are people out there who are trying to take advantage of the loss of Deputy Herrera by trying to scam you out of money that you might want to donate to the Herrera family. Already several scams have been reported to the EPCSO. The Sheriff's office said they have gotten reports of people calling and asking for donations to benefit Deputy Herrera’s family. The scammers ask for gift cards and say they are with the Sheriff's office. The Sheriff's office will never contact anyone directly to solicit funds, and they would never ask for gift cards. The scammers are asking for gift cards because they are so hard to trace. Don't be taken in by these worthless scammers.

If you would like to donate to the Herrera family, there are only two legitimate fundraising campaigns at this time, a GoFundMe donation page, and a Facebook donation page.

Remember, the scammers will try to make you think that they are working for the Sheriff's office, but they aren't. The two links above are the ones that are verified for the Herrera family.

Rest in peace, Deputy Herrera. We can never repay your sacrifice.
