More shots in more arms and the continuation of the safe practices and guidelines we’ve learned from living in the shadow of a virus that spreads by proximity has resulted in the live music experience slowly returning to clubs, bars, and other venues around town.

Speaking Rock Entertainment Center, which has always been known as the place to go to see a live music show, is one of the venues that recently resumed throwing outdoor concerts. And not just any type of concerts, the kind El Pasoans love to attend: free concerts.

The entertainment center has been cranking up the volume with mostly local bands on Fridays and Saturdays, but the schedule is already getting booked up and fully stocked with national acts just in time for the upcoming summer concert season.

The April 16 Drowning Pool show was “the first of many more free concerts to come once again,” they proclaimed on a recent social media post. And true to their word, more were just announced.

Per the event section on the Speaking Rock Facebook, El Paso favorite Sunny Ozuna, country music group Midland, old school Rock-n-Roll legend Chubby Checker, and singer-performer Chiquis, daughter of the late Jenni Rivera, will be hitting the stage in the months to come.

Ozuna is booked for two-nights, including a free Mother’s Day concert, Chubby Checker on Father’s Day, and Midland is set for the Fourth of July.

Precautions currently being taken include everyone being required to wear masks and stay socially distanced, and capacity in the outdoor plaza limited by virtue of a first-come, first-served basis. "We know this pandemic isn’t completely over,” Speaking Rock said in a recent social media post. “We will continue to err on the side of caution.”
