Local businesses and El Pasoans are taking social media to chime in after Governor Greg Abbott announced reopening all businesses at full capacity and removing the statewide mask mandate.

On Tuesday afternoon, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made a head-scratching decision to lift all COVID-19 restrictions and mask mandates.

The announcement made by the Governor ignores the science and the fact that Texas is still dealing with Winter Storm Uri's aftermath and has been a hot spot for the pervasive novel coronavirus in El Paso.

Greg Abbott posted on Twitter:

“I just announced Texas is OPEN 100%.

EVERYTHING.

I also ended the statewide mask mandate.”

Naturally, El Pasoans were in shock, especially since El Paso has been a pandemic hot spot that also brought about a high death toll and make-shift hospitals to the Convention Center.

Our governor's alternate reality does not coincide with the science that top health experts are providing. According to John Hopkins University, Texas cases increased by 5% over the last two weeks, and vaccinations are slow to come by.

El Pasoans shared their overall disappointment with the Governor's decision to reopen Texas at full capacity, saying:

I’m still wearing my mask 😷 !! I don’t care what people have to say

Businesses also took to social media to ensure their customers and patrons that while Texas will reopen beginning March 10, they are still planning to adhere to CDC safety health recommendations.

I applaud all these and all the other local businesses that plan to follow safety precautions and mask policies.

The good news is that a third vaccine is coming soon, and hopefully, we can ramp up vaccinations and get rid of this deadly virus once and for all. Until then, I’ll continue to wear my mask, and I hope you do too.
