El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank was one of the 100 organizations selected to receive part of $3 million in grants to fight hunger this spring.

The grant of $45,000 will be used to support and expand the BackPack for Kids programs in El Paso. This program provides food for children who benefit from the free school meals programs, but have been identified as showing symptoms of hunger on Mondays after a weekend with no school meals. The purpose is to send home a “backpack” full of nutritious foods for kids to eat during the weekends so that they may continue to develop mentally and physically.

El Pasoans Fighting Hunger is one of more than 200 Feeding America banks located throughout the United States.  The Feeding America network of food banks and their partner food assistance agencies, such as food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and after-school programs, feed 37 million people annually, including nearly 14 million children.

El Pasoans helped our local food bank win by spreading the word and by voting every day throughout the month of April on Walmart’s facebook application “Fighting Hunger Together” paying off and making a world of difference. Way to go El Paso!
