The Department of Public Health has confirmed that an El Paso man has been diagnosed with West Nile Virus.

A male in his late 40’s who lives in West El Paso, is the fifth case of West Nile Virus in the county. The identified male who is recovering at home has not traveled abroad and has no previous medical conditions.

The Department of Health is offering tips on how to avoid contracting the virus using the 4D’s:

  • DEET – When going outdoors remember to use insect repellents
  • DRESS – When possible wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks
  • DUSK and DAWN – Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito times which are dusk and dawn.
  • DRAIN - Reduce mosquitoes by draining standing water on a regular basis. To report standing water or mosquito breeding, call 3-1-1.
