El Paso History Museum To Highlight El Paso Baseball History With Free Exhibit

El Paso has a long history with the sport of baseball. There have been a number of semi-pro teams that have made their homes here and for the next few months, you can learn all about them at the El Paso Museum of History.

The Museum's newest exhibition is called Bases Loaded: El Paso and Beyond, and it details the local and national history of baseball starting with its pre-Civil War origins to the Chihuahuas arriving in El Paso.

Part of the exhibit deals with the role that race played in baseball. Parts of the exhibit touch on the breaking of the color barrier in the United States and the rise of baseball in Mexico. The exhibit also shows how different groups have helped shaped baseball from it's inception in the United States. Kids will enjoy the interactive displays, the walkable baseball diamond, and the Chihuahuas fan photo booth.

The El Paso Museum of History hit a homerun - see what I did there - in getting materials for the exhibit. The large baseball community in El Paso offered up artifacts from their own collections and lent them to the museum for the exhibition. Fernando Grado, an El Paso native and baseball enthusiast has been collecting baseball artifacts since he was a kid. His memorabilia from the Browns and Diablos as well as collectibles from eminent players like Jackie Robinson and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson are on display. There are also items from the El Paso Chihuahuas’ archives.
