An east El Paso skate park just got an upgrade and it’s ready for skateboarders to enjoy just in time for the warmer weather.

The City of El Paso recently held a grand opening celebration for the Dick Shinaut Skatepark which is located at 11701 Rufus Brijalba Drive in east El Paso.

The opening of this skate park is part of improvement projects and a plan by the city to enhance the quality of life through the creation of recreational, cultural, and educational environments.

“Having parks in neighborhoods is critical,” said Ben Fyffe, Managing Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of El Paso. “They build stronger bonds between neighbors, they make sure kids are more active, and having amenities like this are critical to making sure that kids are getting outside.”

The refurbished skate park has been under construction for a while now and I say that because I live in the area so whenever I would pass by the skate park I always wondered when and if it was going to reopen thankfully it’s opened just in time for kids to enjoy a little skating during their Spring break vacation.

The skate park’s makeover includes a new 6-inch concrete skate park with brand-new grinding rails, concrete steps, ramps, and other amenities.

The skate park also features a walking path that surrounds the skate park.

According to Fyfee, El Paso now has a total of 13 skate parks in the community.

“These skate parks are designed to make sure that our kids have amenities to help them grow and hopefully keep them here to build lives,” said Fyfee.

The refurbished skate park is a collaboration between the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department and the Office of City Rep. Art Fierro, District 6.
