For over 30 years, between 1953 and 1987, thousands of military members, their families, and civilians were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejune, a military training facility located in Jackson, North Carolina.

Tests from routine water treatment plant sampling and samples of water supply wells identified the presence of trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), vinyl chloride (VC) and benzene in several key water sources used by the facility.

However, despite the federal government's knowledge that these toxic substances and dangerous chemicals had affected people's drinking water, the information was swept under the rug for years — and the repercussions were deadly.

Compared with civilian workers from another military base, which did not have contaminated water, an Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry study found that Camp Lejune personnel had higher mortality rates for the following causes of death:

  • Cancers of the female breast, kidney, lung, oral cavity, prostate, and rectum
  • Kidney diseases
  • Leukemia
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Parkinson's disease

Based on these facts, it is evident that some of our nation's heroes and their families who made the biggest sacrifices were irreparably injured or killed by the very water that was supposed to nourish them. Thanks to a new law, however, those negatively affected will be able to file a claim for compensation.
