Are You Familiar With ‘The Christmas Pickle’ Tradition?
When it comes to holiday traditions every family has different ones that they do every year.
I know our family has plenty, but after I had my son and he was old enough to understand what a tradition was, I decided to start a holiday tradition featuring my FAVORITE snack of all time: A PICKLE!
The Christmas Pickle tradition is not something I made up. I had read an article about this tradition and wanted to try it with my son every year. However, I decided to switch up our tradition and instead of getting a special gift for finding the pickle, whoever finds the pickle will have good luck for the rest of the new year!
If you are not familiar with this tradition, here is one way to celebrate this tradition:
On Christmas Eve, parents sneakily place a pickle ornament on the Christmas tree. Fast forward to Christmas morning, and it's game time!
The first child to spot the pickle gets the ultimate prize—opening the first gift, receiving a special present.
Now, the real question is: Why a pickle ornament?
The origin is still a mystery, but some say it's German, with the original name being Weihnachtsgurke. Others believe it was a clever marketing ploy by Woolworth's, an old-school five-and-dime store, to boost sales in the late 1800s.
Whether it's a nod to Deutschland or a clever marketing gimmick, one thing's for sure—The Christmas Pickle tradition adds a splash of fun to your festivities and the best part is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on these unique ornaments!
I’m pretty certain that me and my son found our pickle ornament at the dollar store and I have seen plenty of other pickle ornaments at other stores.
