5 Things You Didn’t Know About Pope Francis
With the Pope in the Borderland today, it's an exciting historical time for everyone in the surrounding area. Even if you aren't Catholic you can appreciate what this man is doing for his religion and the people that follow him. Here are 5 things I bet you didn't know about Pope Francis.
1.) Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He later chose the name Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi because he wanted to show his lifelong commitment and support for the poor.
2.) Pope Francis is the first non-European Pope. However, his parents are from Italy giving him some European ancestry.
3.) Before he started his Papal duties he did attend classes and to major in chemical engineering. He is also fluent in Italian and German.
4.) When the Pope was just a young teen he suffered a horrible lung infection and he had to have portion of his lung removed.
5.) Keeping true to his commitment to the poor, he insisted not moving into the Apostolic Palace making him the first Pope in 110 years to live outside of the official Papal residence.
So many facts we don't know about such an influential man and it makes him just that more iconic.
