Every year, I host my family for Easter egg dyeing on Good Friday. We have lunch and then the kiddos get to making those eggs pretty for the Easter Bunny. Over the years, I've learned a few hacks that have made egg dyeing so much easier and so much more fun for everyone involved.

1. Buy a piece of denim for a tablecloth - Buy a couple of yards of denim fabric and spread it over whatever table you are using to dye the eggs. You don't have to hem it, and because it's heavy material, it won't slide around on the table. After you're finished with the eggs, throw it in the washing machine and use it anytime you need to protect a surface. You can use it in the trunk of your car when you're buying plants or hauling kid's bikes. You can use it for a picnic at the park. You can take it to the ballgame and the whole family can sit comfortably in the grass. Denim is pretty indestructible and you'll be able to use it forever.

2. Dye eggs outside - Easter egg dye is a lot easier to deal with by washing it down with a hose than it is with a mop in your kitchen. I learned that after the first time I had a kitchen full of kids making a mess.

3. Use food coloring to get deeper dye colors - If you want really deep or different dye colors, make your own egg dye. Use either traditional food coloring or icing colors. You need a bowl with 1 cup of hot water, 1 teaspoon vinegar and 10-20 drops of food coloring (depending on how intense you want the color). Make sure you use a deep enough bowl to submerge the egg, and that's it.

4. Buy white t-shirts - Hear me out. Let the kiddos wear the t-shirts and make as much of a mess as they want. After all the dyeing fun is done, use a permanent marker and date the shirt. It's a fun keepsake of the day and fun to remember how little the beasties used to be as they get older.

5. Dye the kids drinks - This is just a fun thing to do that has nothing to do with eggs. If you're going to have lunch and then dye eggs, let the kids dye a cup of Sprite with food coloring. You could also dye lemonade with a couple of drops of food coloring. The little monsters will think it's super cool to dye their drinks different colors.

Happy Easter!
