There’s a lot of heavy machinery moving a lot of dirt on a huge parcel of land on the outskirts of Northeast El Paso off of US-54.

No, it’s not a new retail outlet of some sort that will be home to more chain restaurants and stores that we already have three or four of elsewhere in El Paso. At least not yet.

But it is the start of a major project in the long under served part of town.

Northeast El Paso Seeing Long Overdue Growth

After being getting passed over by retailers for years, the Northeast El Paso has started to see the business community finally take notice.

More shopping and dining establishments have opened locations in the often-overlooked part of town or announced plans to do so. And it’s not just restaurants and department stores.

The dirt being moved near the Painted Dunes Golf Course is the beginning of Campo del Sol, a resort-themed master planned community

The development is being constructed on the huge swath of land the City of El Paso practically gave away to local billionaire Paul Foster in 2019 in a land-swap deal for 44 acres of land he owned on the west side by what is now the booming West Town Marketplace when the city was trying to lure Great Wolf Lodge.

Plans for the over 2,000 acres of land include a residential community of homes and apartments, schools, a hike and bike trail system, and commercial development.

Resort-style amenities such as an outdoor aquatic center with a splash pad, pool, and lazy river, event pavilions, dog parks and a playground area are also part of the vision.
