There is nothing worse than the start of a new year. You gotta get used to writing the new year on your checks - yes, some of us still write checks - no, you shut up. You also have to get and try to keep a New Year's resolution. Most of us who have spent the two week holiday season eating our way through tamales, chili con queso, and Christmas cookies tend to go with the New Year's resolution of losing weight, but that is a tough one to keep. Winter weather in El Paso isn't that tough, but the little bit of cold weather we get makes you want to wrap yourself up like a burrito in a fluffy comforter and binge on all the leftover candy and cookies that Santa didn't get to.

If you're still intent on losing weight to keep your New Year's resolution during the long, cold winter, take some advice from diet experts and use little cheats to keep you on track. They say that if you go cold turkey on sweets and treats, you'll just end up cramming a ton of bad stuff down your pie hole and destroying all the gains you've made in the gym. Instead, you should run out to Krispy Kreme and get yourself some of their mini donuts to help you on your weight loss journey. They are about 100 calories a piece and if you can manage to eat only one, you're a better person than I am!

For comparison, here is what 100 calories of some of your favorite foods is:

1/3 McDonald's cheeseburger

25 strawberries

1 tablespoon of peanut butter

23 M&M candies, plain

3 cups air-popped popcorn, no butter

4 fl. oz. red wine

90% of one Reese's Peanut Butter cup
