Members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso will get free skating and hockey lessons from the El Paso Rhinos.  Beginning in December, those kids that are in the Boys and Girls Clubs can begin with the first step in their hockey journey by learning how to skate at the Rhinos’ home ice rink adjacent to the El Paso County Coliseum.

This collaboration will consist of Boys and Girls Clubs officials being in charge of registration in the program and providing transportation to and from the ice rink, while the Rhinos will pitch in by providing instructors and equipment.

It may now seem like it, but El Paso has turned into a hockey hotbed of sorts and this is not a recent development.  El Pasoans just seemed to take to the sport almost immediately after the El Paso Buzzards first appeared on the scene in the 90s.  It has helped that the Buzzards and especially the Rhinos programs have produced teams that consistently win.

It’s also great to see the Rhinos still finding ways to give back to the community and I would expect that involvement to grow after they won the Kraft Hockeyville USA competition which will provide them with $150,000 worth of rink upgrades.

Hockey lessons for El Paso Boys and Girls Clubs members will run from December 2020 to May 2021 and will be held in a manner that allows for social distancing.  Measures will also be taken to ensure that any equipment is sanitized prior to use.
