Proposed Climate Charter Could Cost El Paso BILLIONS, Study Suggests

One of the issues El Pasoans can vote on May 6th will be the proposed Climate Charter

But the Chamber of Commerce says that charter could cost El Paso billions of dollars and potentially result in the loss of over 170,000 jobs.

The proposed charter makes suggestions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, massive investments in renewable energy, and transferring ownership of EP Electric over to the city.

It also proposes the formation of a city “climate department”.

But, according to the Chamber, a study done by an Idaho-based consulting firm suggests that the charter could result in massive job loss and crippling financial losses.

The damage, the study suggests, would be wide-ranging and long-lasting.

Focusing on the relatively short term, the study says the adoption of the charter could cost the community $7.9 billion in earnings and $28.2 billion in sales by 2030 alone.

The study also predicts a 40% decrease in the local economy and an average loss of $38,000 in earnings PER HOUSEHOLD in El Paso.

These dire predictions, of course, led to predictable claims that “climate change is a hoax!”

I’m not sure how many of these Nextdoor users have degrees in climatology or atmospheric science.

But, the scientific consensus on human-caused global warming is well-established, proven, and statistically unanimous.

You don’t HAVE to be a climate scientist to know what climate scientists think about the issue. You can read all about it, here if you’re interested.

Nextdoor, as good as it may be at finding a lost cat or getting a recommendation for a landscaper, probably isn’t your best source for establishing scientific consensus.

If you want to complain about your DoorDash driver screwing up your order or “suspicious-looking teenagers” by all means, Nextdoor is the appropriate place for that. Maybe look for better sources for science, that is all.

How did you do that, Sue? Did you call up God and ask him? Does He have an office at the Weather Channel?

Since He’s in charge of the climate, can we sue Him the next time there’s a hurricane or prolonged drought?

Look, folks, not every proposal is going to be appropriate, proportionate, or in the public interest.

From the reporting, it looks like the May 6th proposal may NOT be the right thing to go with.

So…vote against it.

But, to claim (on Nextdoor of all places) that climate change is a hoax is…I don’t want to use the word “dumb” so…I guess I’ll stop writing.
