The small town of San Elizario has a shot at being named USA Today’s Best Historic Small Town for 2022 and the people of the borderland can help San Eli take that number one spot just by voting online!
USA Today’s 10 Best provides people with original and unbiased travel coverage of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants for top destinations in the U.S. and around the world.
San Elizario is currently sitting at number 5 on the list and locals have until June 6, 2022, to cast their vote.
San Elizario is the ONLY town from Texas on the list. Holding the number one spot right now is Abilene, Kansas which is the hometown of Dwight D. Eisenhower, a 5-Star General and 34th President of the United States. Abilene, Kansas is also home to the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood home among other historic landmarks.
New Mexico was shown some love on this list as well. Taos, New Mexico is sitting at number 5 on the list. According to the website, The Taos Pueblo is believed to be one of the oldest continually active communities in North America. The earliest residents of the area, the Taos-Tiwa tribe, have lived in Taos Valley for more than a thousand years, and many of the town’s unique adobe structures are several centuries old.
San Elizario’s History:
In case you’re not familiar with the small town of San Elizario, it is a city in El Paso County with a population of 13,603 according to the 2010 census.
The roots of San Elizario go back hundreds of years beginning with a Spanish settlement and military base.
“San Elizario chose to maintain its historic integrity rather than move forward as the railroad became a more prominent means of transportation in the late 1800s,” read the website.
If you take a weekend day trip to San Elizario you’ll notice all the Spanish-Pueblo revival and territorial styles that make it a unique small town. San Elizario is also home to Licon Dairy which is an area store that provides amazing cheese and other local dairy products. Licon Dairy also has a petting zoo for locals to enjoy after they shop and their latest addition is an Outlaw Saloon that families can enjoy after their visit to the petting zoo.
