Massachusetts Hospital Perfoms First Penile Transplant in United States
The recipient of the new penile implant was 64-year-old Thomas Manning whose penis had to be removed in 2012 due to penile cancer.
Surgeons in Boston performed the first penil transplant in the United States. This is a groundbreaking procedure that could soon help soldiers or others with genital injuries. The surgeons stressed the psychological aspects of such surgery and reassured that Manning was a prime candidate with a series of psychological tests and procedures. The donor was a deceased man.
More than 3 1/2 years of research, careful planning and and teamwork was put into this successful procedure and all is healing now. A team of South Africa surgeons performed what is believed to be the world's first successful penis transplant in a nine-hour operation in December 2014.
