A single car crash was the cause of the young womans death early Sunday morning in Las Cruces near mile marker 2 on I-25.

A tragic accident took place early Sunday morning as a 2006 Honda crashed into a concrete barrel near mile mark 2 on I-25, which has also been the location for a construction zone for several months now. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the fatal crash.

Jessica Sanchez, 24 of Las Cruces was the passenger in the vehicle and her brother, Adam Spaulding, 23 of Las Cruces was the driver. About 5 a.m. on Sunday morning he struck a concrete barrel in the construction zone. Jessica was taken to University Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. Spaulding also suffered severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso as well, where he is listed in critical condition.

Evidence at the scene of the crash indicated that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The accident is still under investigation.
