Texas Hasn’t Sent a Migrant Bus in 2 Months
Governor Greg Abbott is quick to take the credit for “solving” illegal immigration. But, he continues to call the border “wide open”. An article in the El Paso Times gives a lot more of the credit to recent Biden administration policies.
It’s been two years since Texas, copying off of Florida, began sending busloads of migrants to “democratic-run cities”. But the New York Times reported (LINK: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/21/us/texas-busing-migrants-abbott-democrats.html) last week that Texas hasn’t sent a single bus from the border since June 27th. It also notes that, according to Abbott’s own office, it’s because “there simply have not been enough migrants to send”.
Abbott has been quick to claim the credit. An Abbott spokesman said, “Texas has decreased illegal crossings … by over 85% thanks to our historic border mission”.

However, the Times and the Tribune both note that the slowdown has coincided with an executive order from Joe Biden that widely stopped granting asylum to migrants.
Federal authorities apprehended 32% FEWER migrants in Texas in June, the first month that Biden’s “no asylum” policy began. Right now has a talking point that says “there are as many migrants as before but law enforcement is choosing not to report them” because…reasons?
But Abbott is doing the impossible: taking all the credit for fewer migrants without giving Biden’s executive order any of the credit.
Abbott instead credit’s “Operation Lone Star” the state’s mission to bus immigrants and send National Guard and Highway Patrol to police border communities. Operation Lone Star has, so far, cost $11 billion since March of 2021.
