Heartbreak in West Texas: Humane Society of Odessa in Crisis

If you’ve ever driven past the Humane Society of Odessa, you’ve probably seen the wagging tails, the hopeful eyes, and maybe even felt that pull on your heartstrings.

Currently, the shelter, which is the sole no-kill facility in Odessa and the largest in West Texas, is facing a crisis.

This challenge extends beyond them; it is a concern for our community as well.

Just the thought of these animals facing even more opposition in their lives than they've already endured is heart-wrenching.

The Humane Society of Odessa

The Humane Society of Odessa is home to more than 200 animals, each with a story, a second chance, and a dream of a forever home.

But keeping that dream alive has become harder by the day. The shelter is running two facilities because its new building isn’t fully funded.

This means two water bills, two electric bills, two gas bills, and double the staff costs.

Every dollar they get goes straight to keeping these animals safe, fed, and loved.

Unlike city-funded shelters, they don’t get government money or big corporate donors.

Every cent comes from people like us, from the West Texans who believe every animal deserves a shot at life.

But donations have slowed, and the harsh truth is this: without immediate help, Odessa could lose its only no-kill shelter.

And for the animals still waiting for homes, that could mean being transferred to kill shelters, or worse!

Community Fundraiser to Save the Humane Society of Odessa

A community fundraiser will take place on December 6 from 3–7 p.m. at Simply Gorgeous in Odessa.
