Some things that many may not know are what the most common types of thefts are in Texas and how the state penalizes those who commit them.

Lubbock Liquor Thief on the Loose

The Lubbock Police Department recently asked the public for information regarding a liquor store theft on 50th Street.

In their press release, they state that on August 31, 2026, a Hispanic male standing at about 5'4" to 5'9" wearing a gray Nike hoodie removed a bottle of liquor from the shelf before running out of the store without paying.

This sparks the conversation of Texas theft laws and how they vary in severity.

Breaking Down Common Theft Crimes in Texas

In Texas, there are nine theft crimes that law enforcement deals with most often:

  • Identity theft
  • Employee theft
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Robbery
  • Burglary
  • Theft of services
  • Grand theft
  • Shoplifting
  • Petty theft

In this case with the liquor store here in Lubbock, this would most likely fall under petty theft since the property that was stolen was valued less than $100. It is not confirmed whether the bottle stolen was under $100, but it's an educated guess.

According to Texas-based Robert J. Gonzalez Law Firm, petty thefts are classified as Class C misdemeanors. A fine of up to $500 is the typical penalty in Texas.
