The El Paso County Events Center will be the site of a National Hockey League preseason game after El Paso won an online Kraft Hockeyville USA fan contest.

The designation as 2020's most-spirited hockey community in America means in addition to hosting the Arizona Coyotes and Dallas Stars on Sunday, October 3, local hockey fans will have a few opportunities to get an up-close look at the iconic Stanley Cup in the days leading up to the game.

Celebration at San Jacinto Plaza

The championship trophy will do a tour of the Sun City on Thursday, September 30th, culminating at the Kraft Hockeyville USA Community Celebration at San Jacinto Plaza.

The free family-friendly event, hosted by the El Paso Rhinos, will include as yet unnamed NHL Alumni, an appearance from the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile (!), live music from some local bands, food trucks you know and love, and the Stanley Cup itself -- the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America.

And, yes, attendees will be allowed to take pictures of and pose with it. Sadly, drinking champagne from The Cup won’t be.

Event Center Upgrades

Hosting an NHL preseason game and the Stanley Cup aren’t the only perks of winning the Kraft Hockeyville USA competition.

El Paso also gets $10,000 worth of new equipment and $150,000 for rink upgrades. The County Events Center has already seen some much-needed upgrades paid for with the prize winnings.

Kraft has fixed and insulated the roof, replaced the lights in the concourse and in the arena, added breezeways, and replaced the lights and mat flooring in the concourse.

Check out how shiny and new it looks now.
