El Paso City Manager Makes More Than Joe Biden
Look. I don't blame Tommy Gonzalez for making what he makes as El Paso's City Manager. He negotiated a contract and our boneheaded city officials signed on the dotted line. They constantly give him high marks but they also pay an outside law firm a lot of money to make sure that the taxpayers who pay his ridiculously high salary are kept in the dark about what it is exactly that they think he has done to warrant an almost half million dollar salary.
TOMMY MAKES MORE THAN THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Yup. You read that right. Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama and so on and so on and so on, didn't make as much money as Tommy Gonzalez does. The funny thing here is that we can all see the job that the presidents are doing. They have to do it in the glare of the spotlight, in front of the world's journalists, with constant scrutiny about their every move. That is not the case with our Tommy Gonzalez. Tommy makes $404,377 a year. Joe Biden's salary is a mere $400,000, and he's running the world's super power, not the West Texas town of El Paso.
WHO IS GIVING HIM ALL THIS MONEY
I know, I know. If we wanted to pay our City Manager less money why don't we? Well, it all comes down to the ballot box. The City Manager is not an elected position but one that is appointed by City Council. City Council is made up of people voted into office by El Pasoans. You would think that those people wouldn't want to pay someone almost half a million dollars in a town whose average annual salary is $42,075. That's like 10% of what Tommy is making per year. Think of it this way - you have a dime? Well Tommy has a dollar.
SO HOW DO WE CHANGE THIS?
We vote people in who don't think that it's ok to put that kind of salary on the table for a city manager. Yes, we need someone who is good at the job, but realistically, what has Tommy done for us that is worth almost $500,000? Nothing I can think of. And why does El Paso City Council pay a San Antonio law firm almost $25,000 to hide documents pertaining to his job performance from you, the taxpayers who are shoveling money into his bank account? It's pretty infuriating to hear him justify that kind of salary for a city that isn't even on the map in the business, sports, or entertainment world.
