So, what’s the deal with Dump the Pump Day? According to the City of El Paso’s latest news release, this day is all about encouraging folks to save money by hopping on public transportation instead of driving. And trust us, the savings are real. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) claims you could pocket up to $13,000 a year just by ditching your car and riding the bus. I bet its more than that though, that seems low for how expensive gas is right now.

Anthony DeKeyzer, the Director of Sun Metro, is rolling out the red carpet for everyone to give their service a try. “We invite everyone who has never tried Sun Metro to take advantage of the free rides and give public transportation a try,” he says. “Our system can take residents where they need to go. Annually, we provide more than 5.5 million rides all while continuously working to make the system more efficient to provide a better customer experience.”

But the benefits don’t stop at your wallet. Riding the bus means you’re contributing to a cleaner environment and helping to ease traffic congestion.

Dump the Pump Day first kicks off in 2006 when gas prices are through the roof. It’s since become a yearly reminder that public transportation is a fantastic, wallet-friendly travel option. So, today, skip the gas station and jump on a Sun Metro bus. Your future self—and your bank account—will thank you!

Happy riding, El Paso!
