Chapin Huskies 5A Varsity Basketball Among Best in the Region

In the varsity boys basketball universe, there is one local program that has separated itself from the rest of the competition.

The Chapin Huskies boys basketball team (12-0, 8-0 1-5A) have dominated the local competition all season long, posting a clean, unbeaten record. The state of Texas has also taken notice. Hoopsinsider.net ranks the Huskies as the 9th overall team in 5A, while the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches has Chapin ranked 12th overall in Texas (5A). Americas (12-0) and Bel Air (11-0) are the only other local schools that are unbeaten.

We had a chance to speak to head coach Rodney Lewis and sophomore sensation KJ Lewis on SportsTalk.

Lewis, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, is a top-25 ESPN Class of 2023 prospect. He has received various offers already into his sophomore season, including Arizona State, DePaul, Houston, NM State, TCU, Texas A&M, Western Illinois and UTEP. He is a fierce off-ball guard that plays with a ton of energy and spark. He's currently averaging 28 points, 4.1 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 4.9 steals per game. He is the focal point for this Huskies squad.

Since district play has started, the Huskies have been steamrolling opponents. They downed Andress (79-49), followed by thrashings against Irvin (83-27), Jefferson (94-30), Austin (94-40) and Bowie (74-38).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team hasn't been able to travel out of town to face higher caliber opponents in East Texas, which coach Lewis addressed in our conversation. Despite all of the accolades coming in, KJ Lewis also expressed that his main focus right now is to try and will his team to a state title run.
