It's time to stake out your spot for the city's annual tree lighting and parade because it's going to be extra-special this year.

After being displaced for the last several years, the Celebration of Lights returns to San Jacinto Plaza on Saturday, December 3, 2016.

That’s when Mayor Oscar Leeser will officially usher in the Christmas season and flip the switch for his last time on the tens of thousands of lights that will set the renovated plaza aglow .

This year will be the first time the 54-foot Afghan pine that has long served as the city’s living Christmas tree will be lit since since 2012, the last time the Celebration of Lights was held at the park before renovations began.

The Celebration of Lights Parade, featuring 50 floats and numerous walking groups all tricked out in colorful lights, will follow the tree lighting ceremony as always.

In fact, Downtown El Paso will play host to a full day of holiday entertainment that day, including an outdoor skating rink that will be part of Winterfest. As soon as the city announces the schedule of events I'll let you know.
