As part of the AmeriCorps National MLK Day of Service, Amistad is currently accepting non-perishable food items to help put on the table for struggling El Paso families.

Amistad is hosting the COVID-19 relief food drive now through the end of the week with plans to distribute on MLK Day, January 18, 2021.

National MLK Day of Service is observed each year on the third Monday in January. It is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service that encourages all Americans to volunteer to improve their surrounding communities.

As the pandemic lingers, Amistad encourages the community to help El Paso families who are currently food insecure as they continue to face economic hardships.

This week, as part of MLK Day of Service, all El Pasoans are invited to get involved in the COVID-19 relief food drive by donating, volunteering, or hosting their own food drive.

Amistad will be accepting non-perishable items, including:

  • Cereal/oatmeal
  • Pasta/Rice
  • Canned fruit/vegetables/beans/soup/tuna
  • Peanut butter/jelly
  • Juice
  • Baby food/formula
  • Frozen food
  • Granola bars
  • Pancake mix
  • Saltine crackers

Apart from food donations, Amistad will also be accepting:

  • Monetary Donations with all proceeds going towards the purchase of food for distribution. To donate, visit www.projectamistad.org/donate.
  • Volunteers are needed to host an individual food drive and to drop off all items by January 15. Volunteers are also needed to distribute donations on January 18. For more information, call 915-298-1104.

All food donations can be dropped off from January 11th to the 15th, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3210 Dyer Street.

All food donations will be distributed to El Paso families in need on January 18, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
