Street construction along UTEP will see lane closures as work crews will begin to lay asphalt along Hawthorne Street and surrounding streets beginning March 8, 2017.

Street work continues on the Hawthorne Street Pedestrian-Bike Enhancement Project as asphalt will be laid along Hawthorne Street at three intersections – Rim Road, Schuster Avenue and Crosby Avenue. .

Construction work and lane closures begin at 5 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8 – Saturday, March 11, 2017 from Rim to Crosby streets. There will be one lane open in each direction March 11 for north-south traffic to provide a passage while the asphalt work is done at Rim and Hawthorne.

During this down time, motorists will not be able to enter Rim to Hawthorne toward Centennial Plaza or the Mike Loya Academic Services Building (V-1) parking lot.

After the asphalt has been laid and cooled on Hawthorne Street, the second phase will begin on Saturday, March 11th with crews from the Texas Gas Service enclosing an area from the entrance to the IC-1 parking lot at the Administration Building to Electric Road next to the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center. Motorists will be able to gain access to lots IC-1 and IC-17 next to Bell Hall.

There will be no parking along the Wiggins construction area on that day and on Sunday, March 12 the whole street will be fenced to complete the street project, which should take about 2 weeks for its completion.

Drivers and ADA Parking Permits:

  • Drivers with ADA parking permits may use any open spaces in IC-Orange or IC-Red lots.
  • Drivers with permits for IC-4 and IC-15 can use the Rim Road entrance
  • IC permit holders who regularly park on Rim, Wiggins, University, or Electric and dormitory roads will be allowed to park in the Sun Bowl or Schuster parking garages for the time being.
