The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is Canceled This Year
Darn, 2020 strikes again. Include the 2020 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl to the long list of sporting events that have been canceled this year.
The Sun Bowl—tied for the second-longest running bowl game behind the Rose Bowl—has been canceled, according to Brett McMurphy of Stadium.
Having the game being played since 1935 is a huge blow to the longstanding tradition in El Paso.
The Sun Bowl Association previously canceled the West Star Bank Don Haskins Invitational Basketball tournament on Monday, Nov. 16. They held their annual Thanksgiving Parade virtually last week. It is the first time since the tournament started in 1961 that it has been outright canceled. The tournament didn't take place in 2008 because they couldn't field the teams necessary to hold the invitational.
The 2020 college football bowl schedule has seen games canceled left and right. Recently, another ACC affiliated game in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium has been canceled. The Yankees announced the Pinstripe Bowl's cancellation last week due to the spike in COVID-19 cases and the numerous travel restrictions in place. Between the ACC and the Pac-12, there have been seven affiliated bowl games already canceled.
