If you've never taken your kids fishing, this weekend is the perfect time to show they how much fun it is. You and your family can hang out at one of nicest spots in town and grab some fish from the lake.

The County of El Paso is holding their Kid's Fish Derby at Ascarate Park along with the Ascarate Fishing Club. The fishing event for kids ages 3 - 16 this Saturday, March 7. The lake is home to trout in the winter, catfish in the summer, largemouth bass, black bass, sun perch, blue gill, carp, shad, crappie hybrid sunfish and minnows.

Ascarate Fishing Club members will teach kids fishing basics, and fishing poles will be available for children to use during the event. You will need to bring your license to check out a pole.

Take along a cap, sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a camping chair or two and you're all set. Although the Kid Fish Derby is a free event, there will be a $2 per vehicle fee to enter the park. This is a great way to get out in the fresh air before it becomes unbearably hot and it gets kids off their mobile devices for a while.
