STAAR Testing Controversy In El Paso: Voices Of Concern And Resistance
In Texas, STAAR testing is a standardized test taken in public schools to help allocate funding for different districts, but in El Paso, teachers and parents alike are speaking out AGAINST the test.
Iris & I asked our audience how they were feeling about the STAAR tests happening this week and the comments flooded in. Unsurprisingly, very few voices were in support of the standardized testing. One caller during the show claimed to be a school administrator who tried to help people understand that the testing is essential to schools receiving funding. The majority of callers beyond this argued against it, saying their must be a better way to decide funding issues without something that makes things so stressful for the kids.
On Facebook, many folks expressed their opinions, on both the parent and teacher side of things. The majority of the voices were expressly against the testing.
Most parents are worried for the values imposed on their kids with these tests, citing that students at young ages shouldn't be stressing about their college choices before they even know what they really want with their lives. Others spoke about how teachers cant even reach their students properly because they don't believe the teachers are capable of actual teaching.
Some parents even started talking about protesting the tests altogether and finding a way to opt out of them to force schools to change the system.
Commenters dug into their own pasts and recollected how the tests used to be less stressful and one commenter even questioned the money that goes into the school systems and what is even being used for.
One determined commenter even blew up the post with reminders about parents rights when it comes to opting out of big standardized tests like the STAAR.
The discussion is still live on the KISS FM Facebook page where you can join other concerned parents and teachers as they share their opinions on this massive part of the public school system.
