Old School Roller King Fans Hyped about New El Paso Roller Rink
Dust off the four-wheels and get ready to bounce, rock, skate, roll. A new roller rink is currently under construction at the Outlet Shoppes at El Paso, and old school Roller King fans couldn’t be more excited.
It’s called Skate, Rattle & Roll, and per a post on the Outlet Shoppes social media, the new skating rink will include an arcade.
"CALLING ALL SKATERS, ROLLERBLADERS, ARCADE LOVERS AND MORE! SKATE, RATTLE, ROLL! ROLLER RINK AND ARCADE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION," an obviously excited Outlet Shoppes wrote, as evidenced by the all-caps, exclamation-filled caption.
The Roller King Legend
The only ones more thrilled at the prospect of its imminent opening were El Pasoans with fond memories of the legendary Roller King. Many of whom took to social media to share their enthusiasm.
Imma let you have your moment...BUT ROLLER KING WAS ONE OF THE BEST SKATING RINKS OF ALL TIME!
roller king days!!
Omg omg omg I can’t wait!!! Remember roller king!?!?
Skating has long been a favorite El Paso past-time. There was a time in the 80s when El Paso was home to several skating rinks such as The Time Tunnel and Wheels Plus, but Roller King on Pellicano was the place to to meet up with friends, show off your backwards skating skills, and couples' slow-skate with whomever you were crushing on.
Roller King closed in 2008 after 25 years. One year later, in 2009, Roller Bomb opened on the Far East side and it's been the only roller skating rink in town for years.
When Will Skate, Rattle & Roll Open?
No word on when the rink will open, but judging from the photos posted above, it can't be too long from now. Skate, Rattle & Roll is located next to Johnston & Murphy across from Ann Taylor.
One question: will it have a giant disco ball? Asking for me.
