*Cue sad Violins* It’s the end of an era because starting Wednesday, May 28th, Southwest Airlines will officially start charging most passengers for checked bags. *Cries in Spanish*

Yes, the airline that proudly waved the “Two Bags Fly Free” banner for over 50 years is now like every other baggage-fee-loving carrier. And I am not okay because I am the type of traveler that always overpacks or takes an empty luggage so I can come back with a suitcase full of souvenirs but now… NO ONE GETS SOUVENIRS and they can all blame Southwest Airlines!

Here’s the rundown on Southwest Airlines New Baggage Fees:

If you’re flying on a Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus, or Anytime fare, you’ll now be paying $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second. Why is all of this nonsense happening you ask? Well, according to cnbc.com, Southwest blames this change on “shareholder pressure” who took over five board seats and asked how the airline company can make more money?

Now, there is a way to get a free baggage claim, but don't get too excited. If you’re a Business Select flyer, an A-List or A-List Preferred member, or have a Southwest credit card, you may still dodge the fees. Also, if you booked before Wednesday, May 28th congrats—you’re grandfathered into the good ol’ bag-free past.

And as if this sad news wasn't enough, apparently Southwest airlines will also introduce assigned seating in 2026. That’s right, no more speed-clicking “check in” at exactly T-minus 24 hours. Assigned seats and baggage fees? What did we do to deserve this Southwest?! Whatever it was we did, we apologize.

Bottom line: The golden days of budget-friendly, no-drama flying might just be behind us. RIP, two free bags. You’ll be missed.
