The best part of being alive is that sometimes you look around and the most ridiculous, almost movie like thing is happening. And it's inspiring and weird and so f***ing cool you have to tell people about it.

During the middle of the summer when students should be sleeping in and running the streets, a group of theater students from around the city have chosen instead to come together for one thing:

Shrek.

No not THAT Shrek!

The El Paso ISD Fine Arts program has wrangled students from across the district to put on a full scale theatrical production of Shrek: The Musical. In my head, the scenario alone feels like the plot to a coming of age summer comedy starring Paul Rudd and Michael Pena as the co-directors of the musical.

The EPISD Fine Arts program brings all these students together not just to put on a ridiculous and well put together show -- but also as a learning opportunity for students throughout the district to learn something about every single aspect of live theater.

Not only that, but this summer program is unlike others because it doesn't just teach these kids subjects they're passionate about, it also culminates in a final product that the entire community can celebrate.

Shrek: The Musical is completely free from July 15th-18th at Coronado High School. The doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm.

You can also stop by a little earlier if you're interested in learning more about EPISD's Fine Arts program. Senior Director of Fine Arts Phillip Barraza and other  Fine Arts educators will be there from 5-6pm to answer questions and meet with members of the community!

Go support these students and their summer dedication! They could all be sitting at home, playing video games and eating Gansitos. But instead they're passionately producing a full musical about a giant green swamp ogre and his talking donkey friend.

Why would you want to miss that, El Paso??? I know I'll be there.
