Nicolas Cage Says He Was Too Drunk to ‘Understand’ He Was Marrying Erika Koike
Nicolas Cage claims he was too drunk when he agreed to tie the knot with Erika Koike in Las Vegas, and filed for an annulment after four days of marriage.
The actor and his bride, a makeup artist, filed for a marriage license on Saturday, and received it that same day according to court records obtained by People. Cage submitted the application for annulment on Wednesday, the magazine reported. In the court filing, Cage alleged that both were intoxicated and he "lacked understanding of his actions in marrying [Koike] to the extent that he was incapable of agreeing to the marriage."
"Prior to obtaining a marriage license and participating in a marriage ceremony, [Cage] and [Koike] were both drinking to the point of intoxication," Cage's lawyer said in the documents. "As a result of his intoxication, when [Koike] suggested to [Cage] that they should marry, [Cage] reacted on impulse and without the ability to recognize or understand the full impact of his actions."
Cage alleges in his filing that Koike didn't "disclose to [Cage] the full nature and extent of her relationship with another person." Additionally, Cage said in the court documents that he was unaware of Koike's "criminal history," including "additional active criminal proceedings." The document doesn't get into what those active proceedings are.
Cage and Koike have been private about their relationship, People noted. They were seen vacationing together in Puerto Rico in April 2018, and have been spotted out to dinner together recently. Little else was known about the status of their relationship prior to their surprise marriage.
Cage has been married three times before. He was married to Patricia Arquette in April 1995 and divorced in 2001. He marriage Lisa Marie Presley in 2002, but filed for divorce in November of the same year. Cage was also married to Alice Kim, whom he walked down the aisle with in 2004. The pair have a son called Kal-El, who was born in 2005. People confirmed that the couple called it quits in January 2016 after 12 years of marriage.
Koike was also previously married, but it's unclear to whom.
