Frida Kahlo was a Mexican surrealist painter and artist known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by nature, her culture, and her chronic pain after suffering a near-fatal bus accident were all central themes in her artwork.

Frida Kahlo, who would have celebrated her 114th birthday this past July 6, has been inspiring artists for decades in addition to tributes worldwide. Salma Hayek even portrayed the famous revolutionary artist in the 2002 biopic film Frida. Since her death, the Mexican artist has become a merchandise darling ranging from clothing to magnets, art, and accessories, all bearing her face and famous monobrow.

While her image has been duplicated multiple times, one of the unknown things about Kahlo is that no one left alive knows what she sounded like until now.

According to the National Sound Library of Mexico, audio recordings discovered in 2019 reveals the artist’s voice. The audio recording is that of a Frida Kahlo reading an essay titled, Portrait of Diego. Diego Rivera happened to be her husband and a famous painter as well.
