Las Cruces Restaurant Matteo’s Sets Opening Date for New El Paso Location
A Las Cruces-based restaurant that prides itself on serving made-from-scratch Mexican food and aqua frescas has expanded into El Paso foreshadowing the imminent expansion of my waistline.
Matteo’s Mexican Food has set the date for its Sun City debut, and I for one am really looking forward to its opening.
From Food Truck to Restaurant
Started by two brothers raised in Juarez and the twin sisters from Las Cruces whom they married; the restaurant actually began as a food truck in 2018.
The home-grown recipes and agua frescas quickly became a gastronomical hit, and after about a year the business evolved into a brick-and-mortar on University Avenue near the New Mexico State University campus.
Brothers Sergio and Hugo Rios and sisters Melody and Michelle – who, fun fact, are identical twins – are the owners. Okay, well then who is Matteo? The restaurant’s namesake is actually Melody and Hugo’s son.
When Does Matteo’s Open and Where in El Paso Is It Located?
West Town Marketplace is the home of the Las Cruces move-in. The restaurant and its sleek, modern décor are located between Cabela’s and Flix Brewhouse.
SAVE THE DATE!! FEBRUARY 12! MATTEO’S EL PASO GRAND OPENING!!
They’re even more super-excited than I am about their arrival as evidenced by the all-caps social media post caption punctuated with multiple exclamation points.
The Menu
I’ve heard great things about the family-run business and its food and I can't wait to try it. The only real knock I’ve come across is their use of cardboard plates even when you dine-in, but if the food is as good as people say it is I can live with that.
Given its New Mexico roots it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Hatch green and red enchiladas are two of its “Signature Plates”.
The carne asada tacos, chicken flautas, carne asada fries, and of course the agua frescas also get a lot of love online. One scroll through the food porn posted below should tell you why.
