We love our pets in Texas and if you know me, you know I'm a big dog guy. And many of you are as well. Just look at the pet-related industry to see how much we love our dogs. There are dog boutiques, daycares, specialized foods, cakes, even cards "signed" by you dog. And that doesn't even count dog friendly patios and clothing for dogs.

And sometimes when we are looking to add a four-legged friend to our family and bring home a new puppy, we look to see what the most popular breeds are. The website hepper.com has put together a list of the most popular dog breeds in Texas. Some may surprise you. But they all seem like they are great dogs.

Below are the top 5 dog breeds in Texas and below the list you find even more pictures of the favorite dogs of Texas.

I have to say, this one surprised me. I didn't see this small dog as the fifth most popular dog breed in Texas, but apparently it's due to the history of the dog and the immigrants who made their way to Texas long ago. According to Hepper.com, they were brought over by immigrants working in mills and the breed was excellent at catching rats.

4. Labrador Retriever

This should surprise no one. Labs are fantastic dogs and one of the most popular dogs in the United States. In fact they have been ranked as the most loved dog in America. Who doesn't love a lab?

3. French Bulldog

This one also surprised me until I thought about it some more. There has been an explosion in ownership of French Bulldogs, also known as Frenchies in recent years. For those who live in cities or downtown areas, they are much easier to deal with than say a lab. And with apartments popping up everywhere, so are French Bulldogs.

2. Golden Retriever

Again, this shouldn't surprise anyone. The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in America. They are kind, gentle dogs and very smart.

Do you know what the official state dog breed is for Texas? Now you do. It's the Blue Lacy. According to Hepper.com, the breed was developed in the 1800's to help with herding, hunting, and ranch work. They are very smart and kind dogs that come with a ton of energy. You really need a backyard for one of these dogs.
