World’s Largest Steam Engine Train Smoking Through Texas Soon
If You're A History Buff Or Train Lover, Get Ready To See A BIG One Rolling Through The Lone Star State Soon.
Train travel has become a new hot "topic" amongst travelers looking for a different and unique way to travel to their destinations and see different parts of the country you can't see by car or air.
There's a new appreciation for these machines and in September, you'll get a chance to see the world's largest steam engine roll through Texas.
Big Boy 4014 built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941.
The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service. Union Pacific reacquired No. 4014 from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California, in 2013, and relocated it back to Cheyenne to begin a multi-year restoration process.
It returned to service in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's Completion.
The Heartland of America Tour starts on Aug. 28 and will pass through ten states.
You can see this huge train in action when it come through Texas in the month of September. Big Boy will pass through East Texas on Sept. 16-17 as it heads from Little Rock on the way to Dallas/Ft. Worth. The locomotive will make a brief appearance, called a whistle-stop, on the 17th at the Pearl St. Crossing in Big Sandy with a scheduled arrival time of 1:00 PM and a departure time of 1:45 PM.
After their stop in Dallas, the Big Boy will continue on through Texas making "whistle stops in the following cities:
- Mexia
- Hearne
- Navasota
- Hempstead
- Houston
- Spring
- Bryan
- Marlin
- West
- Fort Worth
