Lubbock, When Should You Bring Your Plants Inside for the Fall?
Some of you have spent every waking moment keeping your plants alive during this DRY-ass summer, and I commend you.
I planted a few things, watered them twice, and forgot they even existed...
People who actually love their plants in the 806 may be wondering when it will be time to bring them inside. Let's take a closer look to be sure your hard work wasn't all for nothing.
What Should You Bring Your Plants Inside For Fall and Winter?
The answer depends on the plant, but a good rule of thumb is to start paying attention when overnight temperatures begin to drop into the 50s. Tropical and warm-weather plants can be really sensitive to cooler temperatures, so don't wait until your plant is already experiencing a personal crisis...
Before You Bring Them In
Check your plants for bugs you might not want in your home before you drag them inside. You don't want to mistakenly turn your living room into an all-inclusive resort for the bugs living in your pots.
It's also a good idea to clean up dead leaves and trim away anything that is clearly struggling to keep up.
Reminder
Your plants have gotten used to the bright outdoors sunlight all summer long, so don't immediately stick them into the darkest corner of your home. Find a space with an appropriate amount of light and give them some time to adjust before you call the plant doctor...if there is a plant doctor...
More Tips
Bringing your plants inside does NOT mean watering them constantly. You might want to water them every time you see them, but too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Check the soil with your finger first so you don't drown the poor things.
Keep Those Plants Happy!
Basically, fall is the time of year to start watching overnight temps, inspecting your plants for bug activity, and figuring out who needs to come inside before the first big freeze.
Good luck!
