The San Antonio Spurs are back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 and have a very legitimate chance of winning it all. However, the Spurs' very first finals trip was against the New York Knicks in 1999. This was the first time that the
Spurs became NBA Champs and brought home the trophy, and all of Victoria is hoping 2026 will be a repeat of 1999.
It's been a long time since the Spurs and Knicks have met each other at the NBA Finals, 27 years to be exact. So much has changed with the teams since their last finals match, and a lot has changed in Victoria, too. So we decided to take a look back at what Victoria looked like when the Spurs won the NBA Finals against the Knicks in 1999.

In 1999, Victoria hosted its last high school rivalry game against the Victoria High Stingarees and Stroman Raiders.

The last time the Spurs and Knicks met in the NBA Finals in 1999, Victoria had its final rivalry game with the Victoria High Stingarees and Stroman Raiders at Memorial Stadium.

The final game of this high intensity rivalry took place in September of 1999! The Victoria Stingarees won the game 53-21.

The Trevino family ruled Mexican food in Victoria.

The last time the Spurs and Knicks met in the finals in 1999, Victoria had two amazing Mexican restaurants: Siesta Restaurant and El Toro Restaurant.

Siesta closed its doors for good in 2012 after 56 years of business in Victoria. Since then, the location has been remodeled twice and recently became Frances Maries and Campomar. Compomar is now closed for business.

Victoria didn't have a freeway in 1999.

Back then, John Stockbauer was connected to Navarro; there were no overpasses in town. It wasn't until 2003 that the first overpasses were built in Victoria, catapulting the next wave of development in Victoria.

We has video game arcades in the mall.

The last time the Spurs and Knicks met in the finals in 1999, Victoria had two arcades in the Victoria Mall - Tilt and Aladdin's Castle. A much simpler but perfect time in gaming. Both arcades were closed by 2011. My wife worked at Aladdin's Castle back in the day.

We had a Super K-Mart in Victoria

The last time the Spurs and Knicks met in the finals in 1999, we had a Super K Mart on North Navarro, where the H-E-B Plus now stands.

The Super K-mart closed its doors in 2002 before being demolished for the H-E-B Plus that stands today. To take it back even further, the original K-Mart in Victoria was located at the corner of Navarro and Crestwood and closed in 1997.

Cactus Canyon was the party spot in Victoria.

The last time the Spurs and Knicks met in the finals in 1999, we could party at a place called Cactus Canyon on Navarro in Victoria.

Cactus Canyon opened its doors back in November of 1998 before permanently closing in April 2018. Shortly after, the Hay Room opened up in its location.
