You will not be able to buy or use any fireworks this Fourth of July in the unincorporated areas of El Paso County.

County Judge Veronica Escobar said last Friday that she would issue a drought disaster declaration to ban the sale and use of fireworks, and she put the ban in place at 10:30 Monday morning. She is asking the governor to extend the ban through July 4th.

Escobar said the ongoing drought makes the ban necessary and even though people will not like the ban, it is the County’s responsibility to protect people in the outlying areas from the danger caused by dry brush and fireworks.

You can buy and use certain types of fireworks in Dona Ana County and the City of Las Cruces.

If the fireworks ban isn’t extended by the governor, Escobar said she will issue another disaster declaration and 60 hour ban to cover the July 4th holiday period.
